Human papillomavirus type 16 is Detected in transitional cell carcinomas and squamotransitional cell carcinomas of the cervix and endometrium

Abstract: BACKGROUND The etiologic role of human papillomavirus (HPV) in a variety of squamous neoplasms, including malignant and premalignant lesions of the cervix, is well established. The presence of HPV, predominantly HPV types 16 and 18, in adenocarcinomas of the endometrium has also been reported, although less commonly. Although rare, transitional cell carcinoma (TCC) in the female genital tract, including such sites as the cervix, endometrium, and ovary, has been described. HPV, however, has not been previously … Show more

“…Squamotransitional cell carcinomas (STCC) of the uterine cervix and endometrium were described as early as 1986 by Randall et al and later by Alboress-Savedra and Young [12] and Koenig et al [9]. These tumors differen- tiate from benign papillary squamous tumors and from verrucous carcinoma for their papillary architecture and their resemblance to urinary tract tumors [5,9,12].…”

“…These tumors differen- tiate from benign papillary squamous tumors and from verrucous carcinoma for their papillary architecture and their resemblance to urinary tract tumors [5,9,12]. The urothelial differentiation of STCCs has been correlated by some authors to the common embryonic origin of the urogenital tract [22].…”

“…The presence of HPV has been previously studied in TCCs of the endometrium in 3 reports. Lininger et al [15] demonstrated HPV 16 in 2 (25%) of 8 TCCs of the endometrium. However, Labontè et al [6] found no evidence of HPV 6, 11, 16, or 18 in the case they reported.…”

“…Most have represented papillary transitional carcinomas or papillary squamotransitional carcinomas [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8]. There have been 3 reported cervical neoplasms resembling inverted transitional papilloma of the urinary bladder [1,9]; but, as far as we are aware, a similar lesion has not been described in the vagina.…”
