Humic fractions as indicators of soil organic matter responses to clear‐cutting in mountain and lowland conditions of southwestern Poland

Abstract: Clear-cutting means forest removal (stems only) and is the most common type of forest harvesting but undoubtedly has a negative impact on the C budget in soils. This work aimed to describe responses of soil organic matter (SOM) in the mixed coniferous forest following the removal of trees under temperate climate conditions in lowland and mountain regions in southwestern Poland. Investigated soils are described as Brunic Arenosols derived from sand with an average content of total organic carbon (TOC) in the Oa… Show more

“…1 H NMR spectra of all studied HA samples show a typical pattern (Figure 6) for that kind of substance [77][78][79][80]. The 1 H NMR chemical shift is mainly divided into five regions [53]: 0-1.77 ppm the terminal methyl of polymethylene chain protons; 1.77-2.33 ppm methylene group protons; 2.33-2.8 ppm groups attached to benzene ring protons; 2.8-4.38 ppm protons on carbon connected to oxygen (or nitrogen) (mainly carbohydrates, organic amines, and methoxy substances); aliphatic ring H proton of alcohol methoxy groups; and 6-8.27 ppm aromatic ring protons.…”

“…In order to correlate the soils affinity for the studied pesticides to a particular soil organic matter fraction, the extraction and chemical fractionation of the humic substances from investigated L and C soils was conducted. It was undertaken according to the method recommended by the International Humic Substances Society (IHSS), described in Swift [ 86 ], with some modification [ 87 , 88 , 89 , 90 ]. The first step in the procedure was sample decalcitation with H 2 SO 4 [ 91 ] in order to obtain a low-molecular-weight fulvic fraction (CAC).…”

“…A higher amount of runoff causes higher water and sediment yield to be transported to streams (Jautzy et al, 2021; Picchio et al, 2021), as well as soil nutrient loss, such as organic carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus (Palviainen et al, 2014), thus producing a negative effect on the fertility of the forest stands (Jamroz & Jerzykiewicz, 2022; Kreutzweiser et al, 2008). These conditions also reduce the degree of mitigation in terms of climate change (Ameray et al, 2021).…”
