“…For each individual in the dataset, Statistics Sweden provides information on the Small Areas for Market Statistics (SAMS-areas) in which they reside, and this sub-municipal division is the one commonly used in Swedish studies on residential segregation. However, it has been recently proved that SAMS-areas do not unequivocally identify homogeneous neighbourhoods in relation to their housing and population attributes, given the changes that have taken place in Swedish cities since these sub-municipal units were identified in 1993 (Amcoff, 2012).…”

“…Most walking/cycling trips for the selected activities are made within this distance. Yet, although the SAMS are geographically detailed in urban areas, they can be quite large in sparsely populated areas (Amcoff, 2012). Accessibility measures are therefore less reliable in rural areas.…”

“…Some Swedish studies use the Small Areas for Market Statistics (SAMS). The disadvantage of these is that they are not uniform for the three regions studied (seeAmcoff, 2012). Others, for example van Ham et al (2014), use bespoke measures, which, unlike ours, do not consider the physical characteristics of, for example, buildings and roads when defining what constitutes a neighborhood.6 To achieve this, extensive consultation was undertaken with locally active persons such as teachers and social workers in each area.…”
