Hyaluronic Acid: Targeting Immune Modulatory Components of the Extracellular Matrix in Atherosclerosis

Abstract: Hyaluronic acid is an active regulatory component of atherosclerotic lesions. Further studies are warranted to gain more insight into the mechanisms which decide on the role of HA in atherosclerosis and plaque stability.

“…30,31 A significant advantage derived from working with primary cultures of MSCs is to ensure a clean and clear genetic background without the presence of genetic disorders such as those accumulated in traditional cell lines previously preestablished and characterized. 32 In addition, MSCs present a high sensitivity toward inducing changes in their multipotent differentiation patterns [33][34][35] and proliferation. 36 Therefore, MSCs are an excellent model to evaluate several biological parameters such as proliferation, apoptosis, anchorage, and cytotoxicity.…”

“…Disease progression eventually leads to plaque formation and narrowing of the vessel lumen [1,2]. Medical therapy and lifestyle modification are the mainstays of treatment for atherosclerosis, but some atherosclerotic lesions progress to the point where surgical intervention is required [1].…”

“…Material degradation is accompanied by changes in nanostructural properties, such as surface topographies, which affect the transcription and metabolism of stem cells though the remodeling of focal adhesions. Moreover, the released products from ECM degradation influence stem cell behavior, whereas molecular weight and amino acid sequence play a key role (Bot et al 2008;Slevin et al 2007;O'Reilly et al 1997). …”
