Hybrid Survivability Schemes Achieving High Connection Availability With a Reduced Amount of Backup Resources [Invited]

Abstract: Maximizing connection availability in wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) networks is critical because even small disruptions can cause huge data losses. However, there is a trade-off between the level of network survivability and the cost related to the backup resources to be provided. One-hundred percent survivability can be achieved by dedicated path protection (DPP) with multiple prereserved protection paths for each provisioned connection, i.e., DPP (1∶N). Unfortunately, the blocking probability perfor… Show more

“…These strategies pre-reserve backup resources during the provisioning phase so that they can be made promptly available to recover a cloud service disrupted by a failure. As a result, a cloud service is guaranteed 100% survivability against the failure scenario(s) considered by the protection strategy [3]. This very good resiliency performance comes at the expense of large resource consumption since backup resources are pre-reserved and cannot be used to provision other cloud services.…”

“…While most protection approaches consider single component failures, several methods have also been developed to deal with multiple failures [20], [21]. The concept of shared risk groups (SRGs), where multiple network resources are assumed to fail as a group, e.g., fibers sharing the same fiber conduit, has been considered in survivability approaches by ensuring that the working and backup paths are SRG-disjoint [22].…”

“…In [11], authors proposed a hybrid scheme to achieve high connection availability with low backup resources in double link failure scenario. The hybrid scheme is based on backup re-provisioning, path restoration and 1:1 dedicated path protection.…”
