Hybridization and sexual stimulation inTrichophyton mentagrophytes

Abstract: Mating and sexual stimulation tests applied to 132 strains of this dermatophyte isolated in Czechoslovakia revealed among them strains of Arthroderma benhamiae (40 strains of the + mating type, one of the - mating type) and A. vanbreuseghemii (three strains of the + type, seven of the - type). No dependence was found concerning the anamorphic variety (T. mentagrophytes var. granulosum, var. interdigitale, var. mentagrophytes, var. quinckeanum), teleomorphic species, mating type and the clinical localization of… Show more

“…Two animal strains had both HMG and alpha-box genes. The tester strains A. vanbreuseghemii CBS 646.73 (RV27960) and CBS 642.73 (RV27961) were found successfully mated in vitro by Hejtmánek [ 24 ]; however, in the current study they had lost the ability to produce gymnothecia. Only a single pair of T .…”

“…In contrast to yellow phenotype strains, white phenotype strains have probably existed long term worldwide. Sporadic human and animal infections due to white phenotype strains were described from various European countries, Japan and the USA before the widespread dispersal of yellow phenotype strains in Europe (Ajello and Cheng 1967, Takashio 1974, Aho 1980, Hejtmánek and Hejtmánková 1989, Kano et al 1998. In Japan, white phenotype strains were first reported in 1996 from an infected rabbit (Kano et al 1998); human cases were reported in the following years (Nakamura et al 2002), and the infections were summarized by Kimura et al (2015).…”

“…Ascomata are of the Arthroderma-type with constricted dumbbell-shaped peridial cells [116]. The heterothallic sexual cycle can be observed on Sabouraud 1/10 plus salts [112,116], Niger seed agar [28], and Takashio medium [95,117]. Mating type distribution is skewed in favor of the (+) mating type (MAT1-2) (80% to 95%) in different geographical locations, including Japan, India, and Germany [87,95,112,118].…”
