Hydatid Disease Involving Some Rare Locations in the Body: a Pictorial Essay

Abstract: Hydatid disease (HD) is an endemic illness in many countries, and it poses an important public health problem that's influenced by peoples' socioeconomic status and migration that spreads this disease. Although rare, it may occur in any organ or tissue. The most common site is the liver (59-75%), followed in frequency by lung (27%), kidney (3%), bone (1-4%) and brain (1-2%). Other sites such as the heart, spleen, pancreas and muscles are very rarely affected. Unusual sites for this disease can cause diagnostic… Show more

“…Logically, hydatid disease should be considered in the differential diagnosis of all cystic masses in the pancreas, even if Casoni and indirect hemagglutination tests are negative, especially in geographic regions where the disease is endemic. Familiarity with the imaging findings of hydatid disease is helpful in suspecting the diagnosis and thereby preventing potential complications [2]. Standard treatment is resection for cysts in body or tail, while a cystectomy with drainage or pancreaticoduodenal resection is needed for lesions in the head of pancreas [3,4].…”

“…The most common involved organ is liver (59 -75%) and others include lung (27%), kidney (3%), bone (1 -4%), and brain (1 -2%) (10). Despite its distribution, the disease burden is generally underestimated and only recently WHO included echinococcosis as a part of a Neglected Zoonosis subgroup for its 2008 -2015 control strategic plan (11,12).…”

“…Hydatid disease is still endemic in several regions including Iran (1)(2)(3).Though skeletal involvements are usually secondary to hepatic or pulmonary hydatidosis, but maybe, occurs as the primary disease. The most commonly affected sites in bone are the vertebrae, pelvis, and the skull.…”
