Hydraulic Erosion Rate of Reinforced Tailings: Laboratory Investigation and Prediction Model

Abstract: Tailings dams are high-potential-energy dams built to store various ore tailings, and the overtopping failure caused by hydraulic erosion is one of the most common failure modes. The characteristics of hydraulic erosion of the reinforced tailings were studied by using the self-made erosion apparatus with four kinds of reinforcement spacing 2.5, 1.7, 1.3, and 1.0 cm, respectively. The test results show a positive correlation between the reinforcement spacing and erosion rate of tailings. Based on the sediment s… Show more

“…The incorporation of reinforcement can effectively enhance the mechanical occlusion between the tailings particles, thereby enhancing the anti-erosion performance of tailings and increasing their water shear strength. Chen et al (2021) carried out the erosion test of reinforced tailings. The test results show that the addition of reinforcement can enhance the erosion resistance of particles, but with the increase of the spacing of reinforcement, the critical velocity of tailings erosion decreases, and the erosion rate will gradually increase.…”

“…In recent years, the number of ultrafine tailings reservoirs have been increasing gradually Shi et al, 2020;Han et al, 2022). However, the research efforts on ultrafine tailings particles are still inadequate, thereby inconducive to future sustainable development (Jing et al, 2019;Jing et al, 2021;. The physical and chemical properties and engineering characteristics of slag show that slag exhibits aggregate properties.…”

“…As the slag particles have a certain cohesion compared with ordinary rocks, the difference in material characteristics affects the mechanical properties of TSM. Most of the physical and mechanical properties of the SRM have been studied in three ways: laboratory testing, numerical simulation, and theoretical analysis (Chen et al, 2021;Li et al, 2022). Xing et al (2020) used particle flow software to simulate the triaxial test numerically and elucidated the micro-mechanism of SRM with different rock content.…”
