Hydrogen-bond interactions between poly[(ethyl acrylate)-co-(acrylic acid)] and polycyanate derived from bisphenol A dicyanate

Abstract: SUMMARY: Polycyclotrimerization of aromatic dicyanate (i. e. bisphenol A dicyanate, BPADCy) produces a polycyanate network with s-triazine rings as crosslinking points. In this study, different amounts of poly-[(ethyl acrylate)-co-(acrylic acid)] (PEAc) were mixed with BPADCy, and heated to generate PEAc-modified polycyanates. In contrast to the usual two-phase thermoplastic-modified polycyanates, the PEAc-modified polycyanates are single-phase in nature (according to results of optical microscopy and scanning… Show more

“…Previously, carboxylic acid H‐bonded to pyridine ring shows its CO stretching at 1750 cm −1 ;20, 21 therefore, this 1750 cm −1 band in the composites is due to the carboxylic acids H‐bonded to the s ‐triazine rings in PCn. Our previous study,15 on the cured PCn and poly[(ethylacrylate)‐ co ‐(acrylic acid)] blends, also confirms the existence of the CO stretching of the carboxylic acid bonded to s ‐triazine ring, which is located around 1730 cm −1 . These strong H‐bond interactions would promote the mutual miscibility between CNC‐COOHs and PCn resin.…”

“…The PCn resins have high thermal stability, low dielectric constant, good mechanical properties, etc. Previous study14, 15 suggests that both the cyanate (OCN) groups in the starting monomer and the oxygen and nitrogen atoms around the s ‐triazine ring in the cured PCn resins are the hydrogen bond (H‐bond) acceptors (cf. Fig.…”

“…It can be noticed that pure AA monomer exhibits some characteristic bands in this range. The broad band in the region 2800-3300 cm À1 can be attributed to the O-H stretching mode and the band at 2647 cm À1 corresponds to the 'satellite' band [39,40]. These satellite bands are due to overtones and to combinations of different stretching modes.…”
