Strigolactone is a newly discovered type of plant hormone that has multiple roles in modulating plant responses to abiotic stress. Herein, we aimed to investigate the effects of exogenous GR24 (a synthetic analogue of strigolactone) on plant growth, photosynthetic characteristics, carbohydrate levels, endogenous strigolactone content and antioxidant metabolism in cucumber seedlings under low light stress. The results showed that the application of 10 μM GR24 can increase the photosynthetic efficiency and plant biomass of low light-stressed cucumber seedlings. GR24 increased the accumulation of carbohydrates and the synthesis of sucrose-related enzyme activities, enhanced antioxidant enzyme activities and antioxidant substance contents, and reduced the levels of H2O2 and MDA in cucumber seedlings under low light stress. These results indicate that exogenous GR24 might alleviate low light stress-induced growth inhibition by regulating the assimilation of carbon and antioxidants and endogenous strigolactone contents, thereby enhancing the tolerance of cucumber seedlings to low light stress.

Heavy metal contamination is one of the current serious environmental and agricultural soil issues, and it is mainly due to anthropogenic activities. Vanadium (V) is found in low concentrations in a wide range of plants and is widely distributed in soils. The current study aimed to determine how pepper seedlings responded to various V concentrations, as well as the detrimental effects of V on growth, root morphological traits, photosynthetic performance, reactive oxygen species (ROS), osmolytes production, antioxidant enzyme activities, and V uptake. Pepper seedlings (5 weeks old) were grown in hydroponic culture with six V levels (0, 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 mg L−1 NH4VO3). After two weeks of V treatment, low level of V (10, 20 mg L−1) enhanced the growth status, conversely higher V (30, 40, and 50 mg L−1) level reduced the growth. The leaf gas exchange elements, pigments molecules, and root growth characteristics are also affected by higher V concentrations. Moreover, V uptake was higher in roots than in the shoot of pepper seedlings. Similarly, osmolytes content, ROS production, and antioxidant enzymes activities were significantly improved under V stress. Concluding, lower V (10, 20 mg L−1) concentration positively affected pepper growth, and higher V (30, 40, and 50 mg L−1) concentration had a detrimental effect on pepper physiological and biochemical mechanisms.

Crop plants all over the world face an array of environmental threats among which drought is found to be the most deleterious. The present investigation was carried to test the efficacy of exogenously supplemented sodium nitroprusside (SNP), a nitric oxide donor, and polyamine (PA) putrescine (PUT) in mitigating the effects of polyethylene glycol (PEG)-imposed drought stress in in vitro grown seedlings of Solanum lycopersicum. PEG treatments at different concentrations (1, 2, 5, 10, and 15%) were assessed for their impact on plant growth parameters based on which 10% PEG was chosen as effective drought treatment. Varying concentrations of SNP (100, 150, and 200 µM) and PUT (0.1, 0.3, and 0.5 mM) at different combinations were studied for their mitigating effects. The results revealed that among the combinations tested, SNP (150 µM) + PUT (0.3 mM) resulted in effective mitigation of drought stress in S. lycopersicum seedlings. SNP and PUT supplementation enhanced the growth parameters such as shoot and root length and plant fresh weight (FW). Further, the relative water content (RWC), chlorophyll, and proline contents were significantly enhanced in the experimental plants as compared to the control. Effective reduction in the malondialdehyde (MDA) and hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ), a significant increase in the antioxidant enzymes, and the transcriptional level upregulation of antioxidant genes and drought-responsive genes were observed in the treated plants as compared to the control. These results suggest that exogenous supplementation of SNP and PUT has a positive influence on alleviating the drought stress in S. lycopersicum.
