Hydrogen sulfide and phenylalanine alleviate chilling injury in eggplant fruits during cold storage by enhancing antioxidant activities and membrane stability

Abstract: In this experiment, the exogenous application of hydrogen sulfide (H2S; 1, 2 or 3 mM) and phenylalanine (PA; 2.5, 5, or 7.5 mM) to alleviate chilling injury and enhancing antioxidant activity and membrane stability of eggplant fruits (Solanum melongena cv. Hadrian) during storage at 7℃ for 21 days was investigated. Results indicated that H2S and PA alleviated chilling injury and reduced electrolyte leakage percentage and malondialdehyde accumulation. Exogenous application of H2S and PA maintained significantly… Show more

“…Ascorbic acid, phenols, flavonoids, and soluble proteins are important nutrients in jujube fruits ( Ni et al, 2016 ; Shukanta et al, 2020 ). In our study, H 2 S treatment could significantly prevent the content of ascorbic acid, phenols, flavonoids, and soluble proteins degradation in jujube fruits, which was consistent with the previous findings suggesting that H 2 S treatment could significantly prevent the phenols, flavonoids, and soluble proteins degradation in Fresh-cut Kiwifruit and eggplant fruit and hawthorn fruit ( Zhang et al, 2013a , Zhang et al, 2013b ; Barzegar et al, 2021 ; Aghdam et al, 2018 ).…”

“…This reduction in the respiration rate ultimately delayed the yellowing of spinach leaves during cold storage ( Hu H. et al, 2015 ). Similarly, hydrogen sulfide maintained better membrane integrity, which therefore suppressed electrolyte leakage during chilling stress and reduced CI symptoms with suppressed ROS production in harvested eggplant fruits ( Barzegar et al, 2021 ). The application of hydrogen sulfide has been reported on bananas in relation to energy metabolism under chilling stress ( Li et al, 2016 ).…”
