Geochemical and physicochemical characteristics of geothermal water from A-2 well are investigated in order to estimate its tendency towards the formation of scale in the pipe installation. Based on the geochemiocal analysis of major elements and groups, as well as triangular plots, this geothermal water can be classified as Na-Alk•SO4 type. The ternary diagram classifies it as steamheated-peripheral water. A-2 has a good utilization capacity of 1 L s-1 at the water temperature of 84 °C. Regarding this, SI values are determined as the measure of tendency to form deposits. A positive SI value of calcite (0.14) and aragonite (0.03) at the temperature of 84 °C suggests a very low tendency to form scale, as well as the possible occurrence of a minor proportion of carbonate minerals. XRD mineralogical and SEM analyses of the scale have confirmed its calcite composition. SI values for the temperature of 25 °C indicate the safe silicate minerals deposition due to the positive temperature coefficient. The obtained SI values indicate that the A-2 geothermal water in Vranjska Banja is suitable for use in piping installations because it shows poorly pronounced tendency to form deposits.

Wuhan and its surrounding areas have obvious geothermal spring outcrops, which are unexplored potential geothermal resources. The degree of geothermal resource development in Wuhan is low, and there is a lack of systematic research on their hydrochemical characteristics and formation mechanism. The Wuhan area is bounded by the Xiang-Guang fault, the South Qinling-Dabie orogenic belt in the north, and the Yangtze landmass in the south, with Silurian and Quaternary outcrops and little bedrock outcrops. The Silurian is the main water barrier in the region, which separates the upper Triassic and Paleogene as shallow aquifers and the lower Cambrian and Ordovician as deep aquifers. Different strata are connected by a series of fault structures, which constitute Wuhan’s unique groundwater water-bearing system. Eleven geothermal water (23~52 °C) and six surface water samples (around 22 °C) were collected from the study area. The geothermal water in the study area is weakly alkaline, with a pH of 7.04~8.24. The chemical type of geothermal water is mainly deep SO42− with a higher TDS and shallow HCO3− type water with a lower TDS. Isotopic analysis indicates that atmospheric precipitation and water-rock interaction are the main ionic sources of geothermal water. The chemical composition of geothermal water is dominated by ion-exchange interactions and the dissolution of carbonates and silicates. The characteristic coefficients, correlation analysis, water chemistry type, recharge elevation, geothermal water age, reservoir temperature, and cycle depth were also analyzed. The performance was similar in the same geothermal reservoir, which could be judged as an obviously deep and shallow geothermal fluid reservoir, and the genetic conceptual model of Wuhan geothermal was preliminarily deduced. DXR-8 and DXR-9 had the best reservoir conditions, hydrodynamic conditions, rapid alternation of water bodies, and large circulation depth, which is a favorable location for geothermal resource development and will bring considerable economic and social benefits.

In order to collect and unify data about all geothermal resources in Serbia, a database is formed. The database allows us to perceive the geothermal resources of Serbia and their potential for utilization. Based on the data available in the geothermal database, the estimated temperatures of reservoirs, heat power, and geothermal energy utilization were calculated. The database contains 293 objects (springs, boreholes) registered at 160 locations with groundwater temperature in the range between 20°C and 111°C. The maximum expected temperature of the reservoir is 146°C (according to the SiO2 geothermometer). Some thermal water is cooled while mixed with cold, shallow water. Geothermal resources are mostly used for balneology and recreation, and less for heating, water supply, bottling, fish and animal farms, agriculture, and technical water. 26% of all geothermal resources is used by the local population or has not been used at all. The annual utilization of geothermal energy for direct heat is 1507 TJ/yr, and the estimated capacity of geothermal energy in Serbia is 111 MWt. The results of analytical work were presented in the form of maps with a geological and hydrogeological background. Thermal waters are mostly registrated in the area of Tertiary magmatism. The three geothermal potential areas are identified: Pannonian basin-Vojvodina Province, Mačva-Srem and area from Jošanička Banja to Vranjska Banja (southern Serbia). Based on chemical analyses, four hydrochemical facies are distinguished. Thermal water mainly belongs to NaHCO3 or CaMgHCO3 hydrochemical facies, usually depending on the primary aquifer: karst, karst-fissured, intergranular or fissured.
