“…Groundwater advection rates to surface waters are often difficult to quantify but can be assessed indirectly via geochemical tracers such as radium isotopes and radon (Moore, 1996(Moore, , 2000Charette et al, 2001;Krest and Harvey, 2003;Burnett et al, 1996;Cable et al, 1996;Burnett and Dulaiova, 2003;McCoy et al, 2007;Martin et al, 2007). Radon has greater utility as an SGD tracer where the discharge is fresh or a mixture of fresh and recirculated seawater since any groundwater in the aquifer (independent of its salinity) that is in contact with sediments and rocks is enriched in radon.…”

“…Other investigators have applied radon to calculate groundwater discharge rates in the coastal ocean , karstic lakes (Kraemer, 2005;Tuccimei et al, 2005), estuaries (Schwartz, 2003), streams (Cook et al, 2003), and even on the continental shelf (McCoy et al, 2007). A series of intercomparison experiments demonstrated that 222 Rn-derived advection rates are comparable to other methods, such as seepage meters Mulligan and Charette, 2006) and conventional hydrological methods (Tuccimei et al, 2005), demonstrating that radon can be an effective groundwater tracer.…”

“…While tracer-derived advection rates have been extrapolated to the whole area of small lakes (Corbett et al, 1997;Schmidt and Schubert, 2007;Tuccimei et al, 2005) and some continental shelf environments (McCoy et al, 2007;Windom et al, 2006) in order to calculate the total water input, this approach is not appropriate for Mangueira Lagoon because of its large size and concentrated discharge in the irrigation canals. In a preliminary attempt to determine the width of the seepage face in Mangueira Lagoon, we deployed four Lee-type seepage meters (Cable et al, 2006) along an offshore transect extending 225 m from Oliveira Beach.…”

“…Recently, Lewis et al (2008) revealed the hydrogeological system of five distinctive hydrogeological systems as fundamental before going to assess groundwater resources in the Broken Hill Region, Australia. Many other works demonstrating the necessities of portraying the aquifer system as groundwater resources had been investigated in the Lower Mississippi Valley, USA (Boswell, 1996); Kali-Ganga sub-basin, India (Umar et al, 2001); Central Kalimantan, Indonesia (Ludang et al, 2007); southeast coastal plain aquifers, North Carolina, USA (McCoy et al, 2007); the Bengal basin in India and Bangladesh (Mukherjee et al, 2009); an altered wetland in Jordan (Litaor et al, 2008); and, many others. The subjects of aquifer system identification and characterization have been done for many other areas by many researchers over the world but have not been done yet for the entire city of Hanoi.…”
