Hydropericardium syndrome (HPS) in India: A preliminary study on the causative agent and control of the disease by inactivated autogenous vaccine

Abstract: Hydropericardium syndrome (HPS) in broiler birds of 3 to 6 weeks of age was recorded for the first time in the Haldwani area of Nainital district (UP) in India in November, 1994. The overall mortality in 6 poultry farms was 61.62 per cent. The disease was experimentally transmitted by bacteria free infected liver homogenate extract passed through membrane filters of 0.22 and 0.1 mu APD. The aetiological agent was inactivated by heat treatment at 56 degrees C for one hour and 80 degrees C for 10 min. A precipit… Show more

“…Most of these gross lesions were consistently found in all the birds examined from the three outbreaks attended during the present disease investigation study. The histopathological lesions observed in the present disease outbreaks were similar and consistently in line with the previous reports by various workers (Kumar et al, 1997;Nakamura et al, 1999;Venkatesha et al, 2005;Amit et al, 2010;DomanskaBlicharz et al, 2011;Hafez, 2011).…”

“…The formalin inactivated liver homogenate is vaccine used extensively in controlling IBH-HPS in broilers (Kumar et al, 1997;Anjum, 1990;Ojkic and Nagy, 2003;Alvarado et al, 2007). This vaccine has many drawbacks, including (1) unpredictable immune response provoked by the vaccine, (2) impurity and the vaccine may contains other viruses and bacteria (Mansoor et al, 2010).…”

“…Hyperimmune serum was prepared in five 2-week-old broiler birds using commercial vaccine as described previously by Mansoor et al (2009). An agar gel precipitation test (AGPT) using known hyperimmune serum was used for the initial confirmation of virus antigen (Kumar et al 1997).…”
