a b s t r a c tDischarge characteristics and abatement of volatile organic compounds using plasma reactor packed with ceramic Raschig rings were investigated. It was found that the gap equivalent capacitance decreased with increasing voltage while the dielectric barrier equivalent capacitance increased initially and stabilized at about 700 pF. Compared with empty reactor, toluene removal was significantly enhanced by ceramic Raschig rings, 97% against 48%. With respect to the energy yield in the presence of padding, the efficiency was remarkably improved up to 10 g/kWh, which was 2 times higher than that of 5 g/kWh in the absence of padding with removal ratio exceeding 50%.Crown

a b s t r a c tHierarchically structured carbon-silica aerogel (CSA) composites were synthesized from cheap water glass precursors and granulated activated carbon via a post-synthesis surface modification with trimethylchlorosilane (TMCS) and a low-cost ambient pressure drying procedure. The resultant CSA composites possess micro/mesoporous structure and hydrophobic surface. The adsorption and desorption performance of benzene on carbon-silica aerogel composite (CSA-2) under static and dynamic conditions were investigated, comparing with pure silica aerogel (CSA-0) and microporous activated carbon (AC). It was found that CSA-2 has high affinity towards aromatic molecules and fast adsorption kinetics. Excellent performance of dynamic adsorption and desorption observed on CSA-2 is related to its higher adsorption capacity than CSA-0 and less mass transfer resistance than AC, arising from the well-developed microporosity and open foam mesostructure in the CSA composites.

Study of the Influence of Pore Width on the Disposal of Benzene Employing Tunable OMCs

By employing SBA-15 as a hard template and boric acid as a pore-expanding agent, we synthesized a series of tunable ordered mesoporous carbons (OMCs) with high specific surface areas and large pore volumes. The synthesized OMCs were used as adsorbents for benzene disposal to explore the influence of pore width on the adsorption of benzene. The XRD and nitrogen adsorption results revealed that the pore sizes of OMCs were contracted at certain values, within the range of 3.4−7.7 nm. The adsorption results for benzene on the OMCs showed that there was a gradual decrease in adsorption potential as the pore size of the adsorbent material increased. In addition, an evaluation of the dynamic adsorption of benzene per unit surface area indicated that the adsorption behaviors were strongly influenced by the pore width of the adsorbent material.
