Hydrophobically Associating Polymers Dissolved in Seawater for Enhanced Oil Recovery of Bohai Offshore Oilfields

Abstract: As compared to China’s overall oil reserves, the reserve share of offshore oilfields is rather significant. However, offshore oilfield circumstances for enhanced oil recovery (EOR) include not just severe temperatures and salinity, but also restricted space on offshore platforms. This harsh oil production environment requires polymers with relatively strong salt resistance; solubility; thickening ability; rapid, superior injection capabilities; and anti-shearing ability. As a result, research into polymers wit… Show more

“…Hydrophobically modified polyacrylamide (HMPAM) is a graft copolymer obtained by introducing a small amount of 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid (AMPS) based on hydrolyzed polyacrylamide (HPAM) [ 39 , 40 , 41 ]. The content of AMPS in the bulk phase means the degree of hydrophobic modification of the hydrolyzed polymer.…”

“…Furthermore, when the concentration of polymer solution is higher than critical association concentration, hydrophobic groups will have the tendency to form a transient reversible three-dimensional supramolecular network structure, which will make HAP have good thickening characteristics under high-temperature and high-salt conditions [3]. Due to the above characteristics, HAP is widely used in the field of oil development, such as hydraulic fracturing fluid preparation [4][5][6] and polymer flooding [7][8][9][10]. In this paper, HAP was selected to fit the high-temperature and high-salt condition of the Bohai Oilfield reservoir.…”

“…HAP precursor chains can hinge with hydrophobic associative groups called stickers to form transient bonds with each other through a variety of interactions, including hydrogen bonding, π–π stacking, van der Waals interactions, and metal–ligand coordination, eventually forming a supramolecular polymer 11 . The properties of HAPs enable them to be applied in a wide range of fields, from painting and coating 12 to enhanced oil recovery, 13,14 hydraulic fracturing, 15 acid diversion, 16 oil well drilling, 17 and water control 18 …”
