HydroShare: Sharing Diverse Environmental Data Types and Models as Social Objects with Application to the Hydrology Domain

Abstract: The types of data and models used within the hydrologic science community are diverse. New repositories have succeeded in making data and models more accessible, but are, in most cases, limited to particular types or classes of data or models and also lack the type of collaborative and iterative functionality needed to enable shared data collection and modeling workflows. File sharing systems currently used within many scientific communities for private sharing of preliminary and intermediate data and modeling… Show more

“…To publish a reproducible version of this research, we used the HydroShare (www.hydroshare.org) cyberinfrastructure platform, designed for reproducing, reusing, and sharing models (Tarboton et al, 2014;Horsburgh et al, 2016;Morsy et al, 2017). Steps that supported reproducibility included using the HydroShare sharing settings with a workflow that started with Private while data and models were developed, Discoverable while research was being shared with colleagues for review, and Public, once our results were accepted for publication.…”

“…The specific study area of the research was the Rocky The metadata framework was implemented within HydroShare and used to share the model program and model instance resources for the example application. HydroShare, as introduced earlier, is an online system for managing resources adhering to a Resource Data Model (Horsburgh et al, 2015;Tarboton et al, 2014a). The HydroShare architecture organized as shown in Figure 4.7 (Heard et al, 2014) consists of open source components including Django, a web application platform, Mezzanine, a content management system meta-framework, and the Integrated RuleOriented Data System (iRODS), an enterprise storage management middleware (Rajasekar et al, 2010).…”

“…The goal of HydroShare is to advance hydrologic science by enabling the scientific community to more easily and freely share products resulting from their research -not only the scientific publication summarizing a study, but also the data and models used to create the scientific publication (Horsburgh et al, 2015;Tarboton et al, 2014;Tarboton et al, 2013).…”
