Hydrothermal Synthesis and Crystal Structure of AgVMO5 (M = Se, Te)

Abstract: Single crystals of AgVSeO 5 and AgVTeO 5 were obtained under hydrothermal conditions at 190°C by reacting stoichiometric amounts of AgNO 3 , NaVO 3 , TeO 2 and SeO 2 , respectively. AgVSeO 5 crystallizes in Pbcm with a ϭ 418.14(3) pm, b ϭ 2007.70(6) pm, c ϭ 521.17(2) pm, V ϭ 437.52(2) ϫ 10 6 pm 3 and Z ϭ 4, as red needles. The structure consists of VO 5 square pyramids, trigonal SeO 3 pyramids and AgO 8 polyhedra, as primary building units. The VO 5 square pyramids are linked to chains running along the c-axis… Show more

“…Vanadium oxides continue to attract considerable attention because of their ability to act as catalysts, as cathode materials in batteries, as intercalation hosts, as ion-exchange materials, , and as magnetic materials and for their structural versatility. These diverse attributes originate from the various coordination environments and oxidation states found for vanadium in complex oxides. In vanadates, vanadium is typically observed in a tetrahedral, a square-planar, or an octahedral coordination environment and is found in oxidation states of 3+, 4+, or 5+.…”

“…With respect to oxides that contain V 5+ and Se 4+ , a number of materials have been reported. These include (VO) 2 (SeO 3 ) 3 , (V 2 O 3 )(SeO 3 ) 2 , (VO)(SeO 3 ) 4 (OH)(H 2 O) 3 , Cd(VO 2 ) 4 (SeO 3 ) 3 (H 2 O), K(VO) 2 (SeO 3 ), A(VO 2 )(SeO 3 ) (A = Rb + , Cs + , Tl + , and Ag + ), ,, A(VO 2 ) 3 (SeO 3 ) 2 (A = K + , Rb + , Cs + , Tl + , and NH 4 + ), ,, Ba(VO 2 )(SeO 3 ) 2 (HSeO 3 ), Ba 2.5 (VO 2 ) 3 (SeO 3 ) 4 (H 2 O), Pb 2 (V 2 O 5 )(SeO 3 ) 2 , and Ba 3 (VO 2 ) 2 (SeO 3 ) 4 . Of these materials, only A(VO 2 )(SeO 3 ) (A = Rb + , Cs + , and Tl + ), ,, A(VO 2 ) 3 (SeO 3 ) 2 (A = K + , Rb + , Cs + , Tl + , and NH 4 + ) ,, are NCS and polar.…”

“…Cd 6 V 2 Se 5 O 21 (Jiang et al, 2008), α-CuVSe 2 O 7 and β-CuVSe 2 O 7 (Millet et al, 1999), AgVSeO 5 and ZnVSe 2 O 7 (Pitzschenke & Jansen, 2007). The stereochemically active lone electron pairs open up the crystal structures by creating non-bonding volumes and occupy space similar to that taken by an oxygen anion in the crystal structure.…”
