Hydroturbine Runner Design and Manufacturing

Abstract: Abstract-This research describes a methodology for the parametric design, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) aided analysis and manufacturing of a Francis type hydro turbine runner. A Francis type hydro turbine consists of five components which are volute, stay vanes, guide vanes, runner and draft tube. The hydraulic performance of the turbine depends on the shape of the components; especially on the shape of the runner blades. The design parameters for the other components are affected by the runner parameter… Show more

“…The runners are fabricated in different kinds of ferrous alloys, like cast iron, carbon steels, and stainless steels [1]. The development of runner objectives the maximum efficiency and the design is done for different parts (blades, crown, band, and others), which must be assembled [5]. The runner can be manufactured in one single casted section [6] or cast or forged in many parts, which are welded by arc electric processes, SMAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welding), ESW (Electroslag Welding), and specially GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding) and its variations [7,8].…”

“…It was found that for minimizing water consumption, the ration of head loss to gross head should remain below 15%. F. Fatma Ayancik, Umut Aradag et al 2013 [3] a collaborative design methodology is developed for the design and manufacturing of hydro turbine runners. The design of runner blade to get the desired head and efficiency depends on the correction of runner shape with trial-error, in-house MATLAB codes.…”
