Hydroxylated and methoxylated polybrominated diphenyl ethers in mollusks from Chinese coastal areas

Abstract: h i g h l i g h t sOH-PBDEs and MeO-PBDEs were determined in mollusks from Chinese coastal areas. Significant correlations were found between OH-and MeO-PBDEs. Crassostrea talienwhanensis accumulated more OH-and MeO-PBDEs. Temporal trends of OH-and MeO-PBDEs in mollusks were studied. a r t i c l e i n f o between OH-and MeO-PBDEs, but neither between PBDEs and OH-PBDEs, nor between PBDEs and MeO-PBDEs, suggesting that OH-and MeO-PBDEs may have a common source or similar accumulation behavior in mollusks. OH-an… Show more

“…OH-BDEs and MeO-BDEs, which were thought to be metabolites of BDEs, have been found in wildlife (Marsh et al, 2004;Verreault et al, 2005;Sun et al, 2013;Wang et al, 2014). Overall, the results of BDE metabolism studies that have been conducted to date suggest that OH-BDEs were formed by hydroxylation of BDEs, and MeO-BDEs were then formed by methoxylation of OH-BDEs (Wiseman et al, 2011).…”

“…Several published papers have demonstrated the biotic debromination of BDE209 in fish (Roberts et al, 2011). In addition to the debrominated diphenyl ether metabolites, MeO-BDEs and hydroxylated metabolites were also detected in many species (Mörck et al, 2003;Valters et al, 2005;Sun et al, 2013, Wen et al, 2015. However, the majority of research on the occurrence of MeO-BDEs and OHBDEs in biota samples has attributed its presence to natural biogenetic formation.…”

“…Another common technique to separate different polarity components is gel-permeation chromatography. However, this method is laborious, sophisticated and consumes a large amount of organic solvent [22,23]. Regardless of separation technique, analyzing PM 2.5 samples requires complicated clean-up procedure to reduce matrix interference.…”

“…Active sampling using glass fiber filters is routinely employed for sampling PM 2.5 . The sampling duration was 8 h either during daytime from 10:00 to 18:00 or at night from 22:00 to 06:00 using a P8846X high volume mass flow controlled system for PM 10 . Before collecting PM 2.5 , the glass fiber filters were pre-baked at 500°C for 4 h and stored in the dryer at room temperature and relative humidity (40%-60%) for at least 24 h. The filters were weighed in the electronic balance (0.01 mg precision) with gravimetric methods before and after sampling, respectively.…”
