Hyperfine Structure of Nitrogen

Abstract: IONIZATION BY 5-MEV a PARTICLES IN A 645 of the argon atoms with methane molecules would be approximately 10 8 per second per excited argon atom. The assumption that the cross section measured by Biondi for the destruction of metastable helium by argon applies to the argon-methane reaction leads to approximately 5X10 6 destructions (hence ionizations) per second per excited argon. Therefore an excited state * Assisted by the Office of Naval Research and the du Pont Company. t du Pont Company Fellow in Physics.… Show more

“…2 is therefore threefold degenerate [6,7]. Since the hyperfine splitting constants of free nitrogen and N@C 60 are predicted to be 3.8 and 5.67 G, respectively [17], the hyperfine constant for the splitting of Fig. 2 agrees with that of N@C 60 , demonstrating that N@C 60 exists in the solution.…”

“…These results were obtained from earlier studies [36][37][38][39][40][41][42][43]. The spectroscopic characteristics for N atoms as obtained from the fitting procedure were compared with the characteristics for N atoms in different matrices shown in Table 2.…”

“…For example, the concentration of nitrogen atoms produced by an electrical discharge has been determined by mass spectro~copy,~~ by the absorption spectra of atoms frozen out from a flow system,I2 and also by the heat liberated when these trapped atoms are permitted to warm up and recombine.I2 Kistiakowsky and his c o -~o r k e r s~~ have recently compared emission spectra and mass spectra of a gaseous system of nitrogen atoms, while Winkler and his ~o -w o r k e r s~~, 26 have studied chemically the reactions of nitrogen atoms with a considerable number of compounds. The paramagnetic resonance spectrum of nitrogen atoms formed in an electrical discharge has also been recorded.…”
