Hypoglycemic Activity of Gymnema sylvestre Extracts on Oxidative Stress and Antioxidant Status in Diabetic Rats

Abstract: Diabetes mellitus, which is associated with oxidative damage, has a significant impact on health, quality of life, and life expectancy. An ethanol extract of Gymnema sylvestre leaf was examined in vitro and in vivo to investigate the role of antioxidants in diabetic rats. The extract exhibited strong antioxidant activity in the assays, including TBA (56%), SOD-like (92%), and ABTS (54%). Blood glucose levels in the diabetic rats fed G. sylvestre extract decreased to normal levels. The presence of the antihyper… Show more

“…Ethanol extract from G. sylvestre leaves showed antihyperglycemic activity and improved the antioxidant status in diabetic rats [48]. The extract also exhibited strong antioxidant activity in invitro assays, including thiobarbituric acid (TBA), superoxide dismutase (SOD)-like, and 2,2-azinobis-3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulphonic acid (ABTS) assays.…”

“…TBA assay is associated with lipid peroxidation because of the presence of an intermediary of the process (malondialdehyde), whereas the other two substances are involved in free radical uptake. The authors attribute the antioxidant properties to the high amounts of phenolic components in the extract [48].…”

“…They also demonstrated the antioxidant activity by increasing the levels of superoxide dismutase, glutathione, and catalase in rats through in vivo studies. 19 Kang et al 20 proved the role of antioxidants from G. sylvestre in diabetic rats using ethanolic extracts. Using several antioxidant assays, eg, thiobarbituric acid assay with slight modifications, egg yolk lecithin or 2-deoxyribose (associated with lipid peroxidation) assay, superoxide dismutase-like activity assay, and 2,2′-azinobis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) assay.…”

“…Diabetes mellitus(DM), which is associated with oxidative damage, has a significant impact on health, quality of life, and life expectancy [1]. DM, characterized as genetically based predisposition and dietary indiscretion [2] is ranked seventh among the leading causes of death and third when it's fatal complications are taken into account [3,4].…”
