Hypotensive Effects of Xipamide in Essential Hypertension. Crossover Comparison With Hydrochlorothiazide

Abstract: Twenty-nine patients with mild to severe essential hypertension were treated with titrated doses of xipamide, before or after treatment with 50 and , if necessary, 100 mg hydrochlorothiazide in a 13- to 25-week open crossover study. Based on supine diastolic pressure readings taken at weekly intervals, xipamide controlled hypertension in all subjects: 17 achieved control with a daily dose of 5 mg; seven, with 10 mg; and five, with 20 mg. In contrast, eight of the 29 patients could not be controlled with 100 mg… Show more

“…Comparable antihypertensive effects have been demonstrated for 40-80 mg xipamide and 5 mg bendrofluazide, 40 mg xipamide and 100 mg chlorthalidone, 40 mg xipamide and 50 mg hydrochlorothiazide, 20 mg xipamide and 50 mg chlorthalidone, 10-20 mg xipamide and 0.5 mg cyclopenthiazide, and 20 mg xipamide and 2.5 mg indapamide (32,42,43,47,61,62). Xipamide at 9 mg was more effective in lowering arterial pressure than 69 mg of hydrochlorothiazide (39). It can be concluded that as an antihypertensive agent xipamide is at least as potent as other diuretics.…”
