Hypothesis: Mechanisms That Prevent Recovery in Prolonged ICU Patients Also Underlie Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS)

Abstract: Here the hypothesis is advanced that maladaptive mechanisms that prevent recovery in some intensive care unit (ICU) patients may also underlie Myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS). Specifically, these mechanisms are: (a) suppression of the pituitary gland's pulsatile secretion of tropic hormones, and (b) a “vicious circle” between inflammation, oxidative and nitrosative stress (O&NS), and low thyroid hormone function. This hypothesis should be investigated through collaborative r… Show more

“…The etiology of ME/CFS and its pathogenesis remains a topic under intense debate with the proposal of many competing hypotheses (9)(10)(11)(12)(13)(14)(15)(16). However, there is a general consensus that the disease could be initiated by a combination of genetic predisposing factors (17)(18)(19)(20) and environmental triggers (e.g., exposure to toxins, chronic emotional and physical stress) (10,21).…”
