Aeromonas HydrophilaIsolated from Cases of Bovine Seminal Vesiculitis in South Brazil

Abstract: Preliminary studies on pathologic conditions in the testis, epididymis, and the accessory sex glands of cattle have demonstrated that vesiculitis is the most common inflammatory condition in the genitals of Danish bulls. 5 Occasionally, this condition has an acute onset that produces clinical signs and then becomes a chronic disease. 18 Four-polled Hereford bulls approximatedly 1 year of age (1-2 years old) from a farm in southern Brazil were examined by rectal palpation. “…Motile aeromonad species have been implicated as the causative agents of diarrhoea, wound infections, and septicemia in humans (Trower et al 2000); diarrhoea (Pal et al 1989;Efuntoye 1995;Hathcock et al 1999), abortion and reproductive problems (Fontaine et al 1996;Das and Paranjape 1990), septic arthritis (Traub-Dargatz et al 1994), septicaemia (Andre- Fontaine et al 1995), mastitis (Bergman et al 1981), polyarthritis (Love and Love 1984), seminal vesiculitis (Moro et al 1999), acute deaths (Shane and Gifford 1985), conjunctivitis (Garcia et al 1992) and focal hepatic necrosis (Hiruma et al 1986) have been associated with infection by Aeromonas species in animals.…”

“…The production of Alentejano pig started a recovery two decades ago due to several factors including the increasing demand for these animal gourmet products (meat and traditional high grade transformed products). This breed is part of an agro-forestry-pastoral system ruminants (Moro et al, 1999;Staples, 2000;Ílhan et al, 2006;Janda & Abbott, 2010). Aeromonas hydrophila has been identified as the responsible agent of septicemia in dogs (Staples, 2000;Janda & Abbott, 2010).…”
