Aspergillus nigerfermented plant protein mix as a potential substitute for fishmeal in the diet ofPenaeus vannamei(Boone, 1931)

Abstract: A 45‐day feeding trial was conducted to evaluate the utilization of fermented plant protein mix (FPPM) as a fishmeal substitute in the diet of Penaeus vannamei. Six isonitrogenous and isolipidic diets were formulated by substituting fishmeal at 0% (control), 50%, 60%, 70%, 80% and 90% (FR‐0, FR‐50, FR‐60, FR‐70, FR‐80 and FR‐90, respectively) using FPPM. Shrimps fed with diets FR‐50, FR‐60 and FR‐70 had no significant difference in weight gain (173.22%–178.07%) with the control group (179.50%). However, the br… Show more

“…Plant proteins, particularly oilseed meals/cakes, are the viable alternatives due to their availability and suitability. They have earlier been evaluated individually (Dayal et al, 2011;Rajaram et al, 2012;Xie et al, 2016) and in combination (Bulbul et al, 2013;Dayal et al, 2020;Richard et al, 2011). However, the results are not fully encouraging, which is mainly due to the imbalanced profile of essential amino acids.…”

“…The nutrient utilization of various plant proteins and their by-products has been evaluated as a fishmeal substitute, as they are easily available, reasonably priced, and to a certain extent, have a desirable nutrient content [4]. However, their utilization is not picking pace even after including them in combination [5] due to the presence of antinutrients that hinders digestion, absorption, and nutrient utilization.…”

“…Major problems associated with plant proteins are deficiencies of certain essential amino acids (methionine, lysine and tryptophan) and higher content of anti-nutrients (Jannathulla et al, 2017a). In order to resolve these issues, researchers used a combination of plant protein sources with varying levels of success (Burr et al, 2012;Dayal et al, 2020). Fish are capable of modulating their digestive enzyme pattern in response to the quality and concentration of dietary nutrients and their sources (Gonzalez-Felix et al, 2010).…”
