cis-Dichloridobis(2-phenylpyridine-κN)platinum(II)

Abstract: In the title complex, cis-[PtCl2(C11H9N)2], the PtII ion is situated in a slightly distorted square-planar environment coordinated by two N atoms from two 2-phenylpyridine ligands and two Cl atoms. The two pyridyl planes are inclined with dihedral angles of 59.1 (2) and 61.84 (19)° with respect to the PtCl2N2 plane. In the crystal, the complex molecules display inter- and intramolecular π–π stacking interactions, with centroid-centroid distances of 3.806 (5)–3.845 (5) Å, which form a one-dimensional column… Show more

“…A four coordinate Pt II square planar metal complex has also been reported with two 2-phenylpyridine and two Cl -ligands (Yoshinari et al 2010). Complexes with substituted 2-phenylpyridine ligands have also been reported (Santoro et al, 2011).…”

“…Such a phenomenon was already mentioned for this compound and its bromide analogue Table S2. For comparison, cis-[Pt(2ppy) 2 Cl 2 ] (this complex was originally supposed to have trans-geometry but later proved, by single crystal X-ray studies, to be cis-isomer (CCDC 799847 [45]) revealed nearly no effect at H(6) (D Table S2. The difference between CH 2 signals in both rotamers of trans-[Pd(2bzpy) 2 Cl 2 ] (À0.15 ppm) has the same absolute magnitude but an opposite sign than in case of H(6).…”

“…In fact, the geometry of [Pd(2bzpy) 2 Cl 2 ] was never evidenced due to the lack of the respective X-ray structure, and was only suggested on the basis of ambiguous far-IR spectra: two m Pd-Cl bands, observed at 340 and 336 cm À1 (by Hiraki et al at 352 and 344 cm À1 [2]), could potentially derive either from two trans-rotamers or from one cis-isomer. Generally, for platinide(II) chloride-azine complexes far-IR spectroscopy is an important tool for geometry determination, but it can be misleading, not allowing to judge between trans-and cis-species; as an example may serve the recently studied [Pt(2ppy) 2 Cl 2 ] complex, which originally seemed to have trans-geometry (due to the observation of one m Pt-Cl band at 333 cm À1 ; the respective 15 N NMR spectrum was not measured because of low solubility [21]), but finally proved to be cis-[Pt(2ppy) 2 Cl 2 ] (by single crystal X-ray studies, CCDC 799847 [45]). …”
