EGFRMutations in Non–Small-Cell Lung Cancer

Abstract: Mutations in the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), most commonly deletions in exon 19 affecting the amino acid motif LREA (delE746-750) or substitution of arginine for leucine at position 858 (L858R) in exon 21, are present in approximately 17% of tumors in patients with pulmonary adenocarcinoma and lead to constitutive activation of the EGFR tyrosine kinase. EGFR-mutant tumors receiving TKIs were much higher than what had been described in patients treated with standard platinum-doublet chemotherapy. F… Show more

“…It is known to be a blocker; however, it does have partial receptor activator properties; it penetrates the brain and stimulates dopamine release in the reward center. A study on the effect of varenicline for 6 months and one year on smoking cessation via smoking reduction, when compared to placebo was shown to drastically reduce smoking in participants [8,22,23,30,35]. …”

“…Considering the healthcare providers perform the first two As of the 5As recommended by the CPGTD which are training Ask, Advice, Assess, Assist and Arrange for smoking cessation [4,5,22,23,34,43]. The most consistent barrier across different studies on smoking cessation practices as it relates to medical practitioners is competing time for other counseling topics in a visit [4,5,22,23,27,34,43].…”

“…The current standard for detection of EGFR mutations is through solid biopsy and analysis of the tissue sample by using direct sequencing method (Santos et al, 2011;Keedy et al, 2011;Morgensztern et al, 2015;Sequist et al, 2007). However, the main drawbacks of the direct sequencing method are its low sensitivity (425% of mutation) and the risk of contamination while handling the PCR product (Angulo et al, 2012;Janne et al, 2006).…”
