Entamoeba histolytica Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) Agents that Infect Humans and Some Other Mammals: A Review

Abstract: Amoebiasis caused by Entamoeba histolytica is an important issue in world public health because it is associated with high morbidity and mortality. Entamoeba histolytica is the only species of its genus that commonly causes mild irritation, injury, to inflammation of the walls of the colon and cecum. In some cases, parasites also invade other organs, especially the liver, lungs, kidneys, and brain. Methods: Our article search uses the help of four search engines namely Google Scholar, PubMed, Science Direct, a… Show more

“…Amebiasis is a disease caused by Entamoeba hystolitica leading to dysentery in humans. It is transmitted by contaminated food, and water and results in a high case fatality rate especially in children from poor countries [31]. In addition to humans E. histolytica can be found in primates, cats, dogs, and other animals such as mice and pigs serving as reservoirs.…”

“…Giardia duodenalis and Enterocytozoon bieneusi are etiological agents of acute and chronic disorders including diarrhea, malabsorption, and severe debilitation illnesses in humans and animals, particularly in children and immunocompromised patients (Lobo et al, 2014;Xiao and Feng, 2017;Stentiford et al, 2019;Junaidi et al, 2020;Rafiei et al, 2020). Human infections by the pathogens G. duodenalis and E. bieneusi may be acquired through direct contact with infected persons (personto-person transmission) or animals (zoonotic transmission) or even ingestion of contaminated water (waterborne transmission; Baldursson and Karanis, 2011;Efstratiou et al, 2017a;Ahmed et al, 2018) and food (foodborne transmission; Li et al, 2012;Matos et al, 2012;Stentiford et al, 2016;Squire and Ryan, 2017;Rodrigues et al, 2020).…”

“…Amoebiasis disease caused by the parasite Entamoeba histolytica (E. histolytica) is classified as Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) and can cause death (Junaidi et al, 2020;Gunther et al, 2011). This parasitic intestinal disease has the third highest death rate after malaria and schistosomiasis (Kantor et al, 2018).…”
