Haemophilus influenzae Type a Meningitis in Immunocompetent Child, Oman, 2015

Abstract: Meningitis caused by Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) was eliminated in Oman after the introduction of Hib vaccine in 2001. However, a case of H. influenzae type a meningitis was diagnosed in a child from Oman in 2015, which highlights the need to monitor the incidence of invasive non-Hib H. influenzae disease.

“…The genetic structure of the virulent Hia strain resembles that of virulent Hib strains in the duplicated arrangement of the capsule locus. 1,7 Invasive disease with Hia typically affects young children and can cause severe clinical syndromes such as meningitis, pneumonia and septic arthritis. 1,2 Although Hia disease seems to be rare, the scarcity of systematic reporting of invasive H. influenzae disease or serotyping data from most low-income countries could result in the underestimation of this infection worldwide.…”

“…Most meningitis patients survive; however, one-fifth to one-third of survivors, especially newborns and children, have long-term neurological sequelae[ 5 ]. BM can be caused by different bacterial pathogens, and several bacterial species have become more prevalent in the past few decades, including Streptococcus pneumoniae ( S. pneumoniae )[ 6 ], Haemophilus influenzae [ 7 ], and Neisseria meningitidis [ 8 ]. Gram-positive S. pneumoniae is the main causative agent of BM in many developing countries[ 9 ].…”
