An alternative precommercial thinning technique results in trees being cut higher up the stem compared to the normal method using a brush saw. The aims of this study were to investigate if primary infection of Heterobasidion spp. on precommercial thinning stumps of Norway spruce and birch is influenced by stump height and to test the control efficacy of stump treatment with Phlebiopsis gigantea on precommercial thinning stumps of Norway spruce. Small Norway spruce and birch trees were felled on five sites in southern Sweden and their stumps subjected to natural spore infection. For each species, two treatments of stump height were created: 15 and 100 cm. Half of the Norway spruce stumps were treated with P. gigantea. After two months, 896 stumps were sampled and infection by Heterobasidion spp. was quantified. The height of stumps did not significantly influence infection frequency or size of infection on either tree species. Untreated Norway spruce stumps had an infection frequency of 55% while 31% of the treated stumps were infected. The control efficacy of stump treatment in terms of reduced relative infected area was 61-65%. The area occupied by Heterobasidion spp. on birch stumps was generally small, on average 0.4 cm 2 per infected stump, although 15% of the stumps were infected. The risk of primary infection in Norway spruce dominated stands should be considered when precommercial thinning is conducted but the control efficacy and economy of stump treatment warrants further investigation before practical recommendations can be made.

The biological control agent Rotstop, composed of spores of Phlebiopsis gigantea, is used for treatment of conifer stumps to reduce the spread of Heterobasidion root rot in commercial forests. Two experiments were conducted to compare the antagonistic ability of the Rotstop isolate and nine Latvian isolates of P. gigantea against root rot fungus Heterobasidion, in wood of Scots pine and Norway spruce. Billets of conifer trees were first sprayed with a spore suspension of P. gigantea and then with Heterobasidion at different concentrations. The presence of fungi in billets was evaluated by morphological characteristics of mycelium. The Latvian isolates of P. gigantea showed similar or even higher values of efficacy against Heterobasidion (average efficacy 84% in spruce and 89% in pine) than the commercially manufactured Finnish preparation Rotstop (61% in spruce and 90% in pine). Latvian isolates of P. gigantea have a potential to be used for preparation of biological control agents in the future.

Ocena wystêpowania grzybni i owocnikówAbstract. Commercial preparations Rotstop and PgSuspension, used in Scandinavia and the United Kingdom, are EUlicensed biocontrol agents against root rot that contain isolates of the fungus Phlebiopsis gigantea. The composition of these two products differs from that of PgIBL, previously use in Poland, hence the need to verify their effectiveness under Polish site and stand conditions. Stumps were treated with the commercial products and subsequently checked after one year for the persistence of mycelia and fruiting bodies. Molecular methods were used on the mycelia present in the stumps to confirm that their genetic identity was consistent with fungal isolates from the preparations. Treatments with EU-licensed preparations gave satisfactory results -in about 70-80% of the stumps mycelia were present under the bark. Inoculation with Rotstop preparations was most effective during autumn 2008 (effectiveness of 82%), while PgSuspension application was most effective during spring 2008 (effectiveness of 77%). The development of the mycelia in pine stumps from the two preparations investigated (containing preserved dormant spores) was similar to that of preparation PgIBL (formulated from living mycelium within a growing medium), in terms of their relative effectiveness measured as the percentage of stumps supporting under-bark mycelia (which ranged between 70-90%, depending on the treatment term).
