Allergens extracted from apple, carrot, celery tuber and orange were coupled to radioallergosorbent test (RAST) discs. These and commercial birch, mugwort and timothy pollen discs were used to study sera from 90 patients for the presence of IgE antibodies which react with the allergens in question. Individual sera frequently gave positive results with several discs – in particular with birch pollen, apple, carrot and celery tuber discs. If IgE antibodies to birch pollen or apple allergens were detected, there was a 90% chance of antibodies being found also to the second one of these two source materials. Skin tests and patient histories indicated similar clustering of allergies. RAST inhibition experiments showed that the clustering phenomenon was due to cross-reactivity. All immunological determinants in fruits and vegetables appeared to be present also in birch pollen, but all birch pollen determinants were not present in fruits and vegetables. 45 children with atopic dermatitis were studied to establish whether a positive orange RAST would correlate with a history of atopic dermatitis aggravated by orange. The results were negative.

We studied 708 adolescents aged 15-17 years in the 9th grade of school in Imatra. Of the eligible population born in 1962 77% were included. All were skin prick tested with 16 extracts from two manufacturers with 12 common allergens, which included pollens, epithelia, mite, house dust and fish. At least one positive, immediate reaction (weal diameter 3 mm or larger) occurred in 49% and at least two positive reactions in 43% of those studied. The boys were observed to be significantly more reactive than the girls. The allergen preparations to which positive reactions were most prevalent were house dust, cat and horse epithelium, and mite extract. Large differences in the prevalence of positive reactions were observed with different preparations of the same allergen. Pollen allergens tended to cause the largest positive weal reactions, and the weal size distribution with some pollens was distinctly bimodal. A scheme for calculating allergen potency in histamine-equivalent-prick (HEP) units is presented. It is noted that the result is greatly dependent on the population group chosen for testing.

Summary Total scrum IgE and IgE antibodies against ten common antigens, including Dermatophagoides farinae (D.f.), moth, ragweed, orchard grass, cryptomeria, alternaria, aspergillus, dog dander, cat dander and tetanus toxoid, were determined using the PRIST and the Sepharose‐RAST, respectively, in 100 clinically non‐allergic Japanese subjects and interrelations of IgE responses to these antigens were investigated. We obtained following results. (1) The number of positive RAST antigens, to which the subjects responded, increased in parallel to their total serum IgE levels. (2) Among ten antigens, D.f. and moth antigens contributed a great deal to the elevation of total serum IgE level as compared with other antigens. (3) When the relationship between IgE response to D.f. and similar responses to the other nine antigens was investigated, positive RAST responses to various antigens occurred selectively in the subjects with positive RAST for D.f., and the number of positive RAST antigens to which the subjects responded increased depending upon their D.f. specific RAST levels. (4) Such an association was not found between IgE response to moth and the other nine antigens. These findings suggest that non‐specific activation of IgE‐producing B cells occurs as a result of continuing stimulation by D.f.
