Metaplexis japonica seed hair fiber: a member of natural hollow fibers and its characterization

Abstract: Metaplexis japonica seed hair fibers (Mj-fiber), harvested from the seed pods of Metaplexis japonica (Apocynaceae: Asclepiadoideae) originating in China, Japan and Korea, have features ensuring its potential application in the textile and other industrial fields. In spite of the extensive study on the medicinal properties of Metaplexis japonica, research literature about Mj-fiber is quite limited. We obtained Mj-fibers by artificial peeling and seed removing; then the fiber morphology, chemical composition, st… Show more

“…The fiber wall diameter is about 21 to 23 mm and the lumen diameter is around 20 to 21 mm. The chemical composition of Metaplexis japonica fiber consists of cellulose 53%, hemicellulose 28.5%, pectin 1.73%, wax 2.75% and other components 11.2% (Wang et al , 2019). Metaplexis japonica fiber possesses a distinctive cross-section of a “cross-flower” morphology with a hollow structure and large lumen with hollowness (%) over 92 and very low density of 0.33 g/cm 3 .…”

“…Metaplexis japonica fiber possesses a distinctive cross-section of a “cross-flower” morphology with a hollow structure and large lumen with hollowness (%) over 92 and very low density of 0.33 g/cm 3 . The static water contact angle on the surface of the fiber was in the range of 105° to 151° (Wang et al , 2019). This fiber can easily float on the surface of the water.…”
