Moringa oleifera Lam.ameliorates the muscles function recovery following an induced insult to the Sciatic nerve in a mouse model

Abstract: Peripheral nerve injury (PNI) is an incapacitating situation and has no effective therapy until now. We examined the possible role of crude leaves of Moringa oleifera Lam. at 200 mg/kg body weight in accelerating the functional regain in the sciatic nerve lesion induced mouse model (Adult male albino mice (BALB/c). Motor functions were evaluated by using the sciatic functional index, muscle mass, and muscle grip strength measurement, whereas the sensory functions were evaluated by using the hot plate test. Blo… Show more

“…Nonsignificant findings among all groups suggest that the addition of C. procera leaves in the diet did not change the eating pattern of the mice and a consistent rise in body weight with nonsignificant differences among all groups showed an unaltered metabolic pattern in all mice. These findings are also following the observations published in a recent study showing the impact of Moringa oleifera on escalating functional recovery in the mouse model of PNI (Razzaq, Ahmad, et al, 2020 ).…”

“…The hot plate analysis is a well reported behavioral parameter to assess sensory functions. It was performed by adopting the protocol given in earlier studies (Razzaq, Ahmad, et al, 2020 ). Briefly, the experimental hind paw (Ipsilateral) was exposed to the hot surface of the hot plate (SCILOGEX MS7‐H550‐S LED digital 7×7 Hotplate stirrers) adjusted at 56 ± 2°C and the time taken to respond (jerk, abrupt withdrawal from hot surface or paw licking) by the mouse, on exposure to the hot surface, was observed as paw withdrawal latency.…”

“…The muscle mass was measured after dissecting them out from both hind limbs following the decapitation of mice to estimate the extent of muscle atrophy. The gastrocnemius and the tibialis anterior muscles of the hind limbs of both normal chow and fennel chow groups were used for mass evaluation (Aziz et al., 2019; Gargiulo et al., 2014; Razzaq, Ahmad, et al., 2020).…”

“…Natural products have been recently considered as a source of important therapeutic candidates, that could treat various diseases and considered effective for maintaining good health [ 6 ]. The interest in drugs derived from plants is predominantly attributed to the trust that green medicine is safe and dependable in comparison to the synthetic one.…”
