Crystals of the Schiff base compound C 22 H 24 N 4 O 4 , 1, was obtained by the reaction of indole-3-carbaldehyde with 4-(quinolin-8-yloxy)butanohydrazide and recrystallization of the product from dimethylformamide. The compound 1 has been characterized by elemental analysis, infrared (IR), 1 H-nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), fluorescence (FL) spectra, and x-ray single crystal and powder x-ray diffraction measurements. The conformation along the bond sequence linking the indole and quinoline rings, which have a mean interplanar dihedral angle of 80.9 (4) • , is trans-trans-(-)gauche-trans-trans-trans-trans. In the crystal structure, the intermolecular N-H···N hydrogen bond links the molecules into a zigzag one-dimensional (1-D) infinite chain structure. These chains are further aggregated via π. . .π interactions into parallel layers, resulting in a supramolecular two-dimensional fragment.
