Orobanche crenata (Forsk) control in Vicia faba (L.) with glyphosate as affected by herbicide rates and parasite growth stages

Abstract: Summary The broomrape (Orobanche crenata Forsk) susceptibility to glyphosate applied on faba‐bean (Vicia faba L.) as affected by the parasite growth stages at the time of application was studied under field conditions. Glyphosate treatments delayed O. crenata emergence. Single glyphosate application to faba‐bean infected with O. crenata predominantly at the stage (a) (small nodule) and (b) (nodules with initial vestigial roots) resulted in a moderate to low control. When the stages (c) (shoot bud already visib… Show more

“…Chemical control of broomrape by foliar applications of glyphosate at low rates is recommended for other legumes85 but is not feasible in pea as it is far more sensitive to the herbicide even at rates lower than those recommended for faba bean. Pea tolerates well pre‐ and post‐emergence treatment with other herbicides suitable for broomrape control such as imidazolinones 86.…”

“…In addition, in developing countries, the income of subsistence farmers is usually too low to afford them. Two concepts are considered for chemical control of Orobanche: foliar herbicide application (Mesa-García and García-Torres 1985;Sauerborn et al 1989b) and soil herbicide application. Sulfonylurea herbicides effectively control imbibed and germinated seeds or young attachments of Orobanche when applied directly to the soil in tomato and potato fields (Hershenhorn et al 1998a, b;Kleifeld et al 1998).…”

“…It has been shown that good broomrape control can be achieved in faba bean by glyphosate at low rates (Mesa-Garcı´a and Garcı´a-Torres 1985). This is, however, not possible in pea as it is far more sensitive to the herbicide even at rates lower than those recommended for faba bean (Sillero et al 2001).…”
