p-Hexafluoroisopropanol phenyl functionalized graphene for QCM based detection of dimethyl methylphosphonate, a simulant of the nerve agent sarin

Abstract: The hexafluoroisopropanol moiety was grafted onto graphene and used as a sensing layer for the detection of a nerve agent simulant using QCM.

“…The selectivity of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) was greatly enhanced after functionalizing with hexafluorobisphenol A (6FBPA) owing to forming strong hydrogen bonding with DMMP . Hexafluoroisopropanol (HFIP) functionalized graphene showed excellent selectivity toward DMMP in comparison with unfunctionalized graphene, as reported by Shaik et al . Hexafluoroisopropanol (HFIP, C 3 H 2 F 6 O) is an organic group that has active hydroxyl groups on its sides, which enhance the selectivity toward DMMP by forming hydrogen bonding between the oxygen on DMMP molecules and hydroxy groups in HFIP .…”

“…On exposure to CWA, these toxins directly attack the nervous system and create covalent bonds with the serine residue at the active site of the enzymes, which causes inhibition of the enzyme acetylcholinesterase. This inhibition will lead to rapid death owing to reduced breakdown of acetylcholine in the nervous system . Thus, the early detection of these nerve agents in urban areas has become a critical issue since the sarin attack on the Tokyo subway in 1995 .…”

“…The same benzyl alcohol has been used by Rao and co‐workers [84] . In particular, they functionalized a gold coated quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) sensor with graphene‐ p ‐hexafluoroisopropanol phenyl (HFIPP‐GR), thus obtaining a nanosensor able to detect DMMP by hydrogen bond.…”

“…The same benzyl alcohol has been used by Rao and coworkers. [84] In particular, they functionalized a gold coated quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) sensor with graphene-phexafluoroisopropanol phenyl (HFIPP-GR), thus obtaining a nanosensor able to detect DMMP by hydrogen bond. The reversible detection of DMMP was performed by QCM's oscillating frequency variation, with a limit of detection of 5 ppm.…”

“…In this work, CNT-mat type sensors have been used as they have high sensitivity at ambient temperature and are cost effective. Furthermore, their selectivity is tunable by adding polymers in the CNT-mat [8]- [10] The choice of the features which are extracted from the raw responses of the sensors is crucial for E-nose systems. Transient features such as integrals and maximum derivatives have been showned to be reliable features [11].…”
