Pleurotus eryngii Ameliorates Lipopolysaccharide‐Induced Lung Inflammation in Mice

Abstract: Pleurotus eryngii (P. eryngii) is consumed as a fresh cultivated mushroom worldwide and demonstrated to have multiple beneficial effects. We investigated the anti-inflammatory effect of P. eryngii in mice with acute lung injury (ALI). Intranasal instillation of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) (10 μg/site/mouse) induced marked lung inflammation (increase in the number of inflammatory cells, protein leakage, and production of nitric oxide in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid) as well as histopathological damage in the lung,… Show more

“…P. eryngii , also known as the king oyster mushroom, is widely consumed as functional food and displays multiple biological functions due to its variety of bioactive components. Among these substances, polysaccharides extracted from P. eryngii have been shown to exhibit antitumor, antioxidant, hepatoprotective, hypolipidemic, anti-obesity and anti-inflammatory activities [ 16 , 50 , 51 , 52 , 53 ]. A possible explanation for the preventive effect of P. eryngii mushrooms on impending intestinal barrier damage could be their high β-glucan content.…”

“…eryngii is also commonly consumed by humans without any reported case of allergies or disease to human beings (Hu et al 2019). Daily consumption of P. eryngii is recommended because it has anti-inflammatory properties that can help prevent acute lung injury caused by a bacterial infection (Kawai et al 2014). Furthermore, consuming P. eryngii was reported to lower blood cholesterol in humans (Alam et al 2011).…”
