Puccinia hemerocallidis, Cause of Daylily Rust, a Newly Introduced Disease in the Americas

Abstract: A rust of daylilies was introduced recently into North and Central America. In order to confirm the identity of this rust as Puccinia hemerocallidis, numerous specimens from Costa Rica and the United States were examined morphologically and compared with specimens from China, Japan, Russia, and Taiwan. In addition, the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of the ribosomal DNA was sequenced from six representative fresh specimens from the Americas and Asia. We conclude that the rust introduced into the Amer… Show more

“…hemerocallidis Thümen, into North America (William-Woodward et al 2001). Peculiarly, ITS sequence differences at 13 base positions were detected between the Japanese and North American daylily rust collections (Hernándes et al 2002;Chatasiri et al 2006). No pertinent interpretation was possible for the genetic differences between them because neither spermogonialaecial nor uredinial-telial hosts of the fungus are indigenous in North America.…”

“…1,2). Puccinia hemerocallidis was first detected in Georgia (USA) in and in Costa Rica in 2001(Williams-Woodward et al 2001Hernández et al 2002), and the fungus has since become widespread in North America. Costa Rica is one of the Central American countries from which daylily nursery stocks are shipped.…”
