Punica granatum (Pomegranate) Seed Oil and Momordica charantia (Bitter Melon) Extract Affect the Lipid's Profile and Oxidative Stability of Femoral Muscles of Rats

Abstract: Pomegranate seed oil (PSO) and bitter melon extract (BM), used in folk medicine nowadays are available as dietary supplements, but information about consequences of their simultaneous usage are still scarce. This study aims to evaluate the influence of supplementation of rats’ diet with PSO separately or jointly with BM on the fatty acid (FA), cholesterol, malondialdehyde (MDA), and tocopherols concentrations in femoral muscles. Sprague‐Dawley rats (n = 36) are fed control diet (group C) or experimental diets … Show more

“…A great interest for this natural matrix resides in the peculiar biological properties of both its juice [ 1 ] and side products, mainly peels [ 2 4 ]. Peel, seeds and mesocarps obtained during pomegranate juice production have been extensively investigated [ 5 , 6 ]. However, other pomegranate byproducts such as those originating from the fruit thinning process have received scarce attention.…”

“…Interestingly, this HETE isomer was not detected at all in our previous study where PSO and/or BME were administered, but rats were not treated with carcinogenic agents [18]. PSO contains considerable amounts of PA, belonging to CLnA, whereas bitter melon seeds are a source of α-eleostearic acid (60%), which is another isomer of CLnA, but only its trace elements may be detected in BME [28,29]. CLnA was found to be rapidly metabolised to CLA, which are considered to be active compounds.…”

“…Before administration to animals it was brought to ambient temperature and after that administered to the animals via gavage, in the amount of 0.15 mL per animal daily. Total characteristics of PSO was given previously [28,29].…”
