Salmonella: The Critical Enteric Foodborne Pathogen

Abstract: Persistent cases of Salmonella infection have urged great attention and surveillance on this foodborne pathogen. Salmonella continues to be a significant foodborne disease worldwide for both animals and people in the twenty-first century. It is one of the leading causes of foodborne pathogens infecting animals and humans. Salmonellosis is a principal cause of food poisoning and is, hence, a severe public health problem. The history, classification and nomenclature of Salmonella, as well as its characteristics,… Show more

“…is one of the earliest foodborne pathogens described by man. Motile, Gram-negative bacilli are facultative anaerobes growing at a temperature of 5-47 • C, with an optimum of about 37 • C [163,164]. The genus consists of two species, i.e., S. bongori and S. enterica, which include serotypes with the greatest epidemiological significance [17,165].…”

“…24 Specifically, in B. subtilis, the integration of the CRISPR/dCas9 system with CRISPR-assisted oligonucleotide annealing-based promoter shuffling (OAPS) for pathway optimization has led to a substantial enhancement in the to conditions from mild gastroenteritis to severe, lifethreatening systemic infections. 27 The infection of human intestinal epithelial Caco-2 cells by Salmonella, a model system that closely simulates in vivo conditions, offers crucial insights into host−pathogen interactions. 28 Salmonella expertly manipulates host cellular mechanisms to invade, survive, and proliferate within the host cells.…”
