Schistosoma mansoniexperimental infection inMus spretus(SPRET/EiJ strain) mice

Abstract: Most Schistosoma mansoni experimental infections are developed in several inbred strains of Mus musculus as definitive host. In contrast, Mus spretus is unexplored in Schistosoma infection studies. Mus spretus provides a high variation of immunological phenotypes being an invaluable tool for genetic studies and gene mapping. The aim of this study is to characterize hematological and immunological responses against Schistosoma mansoni infection in Mus spretus (SPRET/EiJ strain) vs. Mus musculus (CD1 strain) mic… Show more

“…Macro and microscopic analysis revealed changes on the liver surface (whitish areas, fibrosis, and granulomas) similar to the results of experimental studies with Mus musculus (CARVALHO et al, 1986;AMARAL et al, 2017) and Mus spretus (PÉREZ DEL VILLAR et al, 2013). The liver is the most affected organ by the infection and presence of of S. mansoni eggs (SILVA-SOUZA & VASCONCELOS, 2005;LOPES et al, 2006;SILVA et al, 2012;PÉREZ DEL VILLAR et al, 2013).…”

“…Such a link would follow from current models of the senescent state in which production and secretion of SASP components ( Dörr et al 2013 ) lead to proteotoxic stress from insoluble aggregates ( Brunk and Terman 2002 ; Park et al 2018 ), an increase in the number and size of lysosomes ( Kurz et al 2000 ), and enhanced β-galactosidase activity ( Lee et al 2006 ). Plausibly, any of the phenotypes we study here in cell culture could have consequences in vivo, with potential links to the stress- and pathogen-resistance phenotypes characterized in M. spretus ( Vanlaere et al 2008 ; Dejager et al 2009 ; Blanchet et al 2011 ; Pérez del Villar et al 2013 ; Pinheiro et al 2013 ).…”

Together, our findings attest to the power of natural variation-based-approaches—to survey the differences that evolution has wrought over long timescales, and as a tool for molecular discoveries of relevance in any one genetic background.…”
