Suillus indicussp. nov. (Boletales, Basidiomycota), a new boletoid fungus from northwestern Himalayas, India

Abstract: The new species Suillus indicus is described based on the morpho-anatomical description and molecular analysis of basidiomes found in conifer forests of the northwestern Himalayas, India. Morphologically, the key diagnostic characteristics of the new taxon are brownish-orange to reddish-brown pileus with low obtuse umbo, brownish-red to reddish-brown fibrillose squamules over the pileal surface, and absence of fibrillose squamules and glandular dots on the stipe surface. Sequences derived from the internal tra… Show more

“…The ITS dataset was 834 bp in total length with 313 parsimony informative sites. We added 26 new OTUs representing new species from China and other studies ( Verma and Reddy, 2015 ; Shi et al, 2016 ). RAxML and Bayesian analyses provided congruent results for the ITS phylogeny ( Supplementary Figure 1 ).…”

“…Diversity of Suillus species is severely underestimated in East Asia, with a significant lack of sampling hindering further biogeographic analyses ( Wu et al, 2000 ; Mueller et al, 2001 ). Despite current efforts to discover novel species, the contemporary richness of the Suillus diversity in East Asia remains unevaluated ( Verma and Reddy, 2015 ; Shi et al, 2016 ; Zhang et al, 2017 ).…”

“…Boletoid mushrooms (Boletes) are no exception. To date, about 96 species belonging to 27 genera have been reported in Boletes from India [60][61][62][63][64][65][66][67][68]. Major ectomycorrhizal host trees that support the growth and development of these mushrooms belong to genera like Quercus L., Castanopsis (D. Don) Spach, Lithocarpus Blume, Hopea L., Betula L., Shorea Roxb.…”

“…They have about 50 species reported as mycorrhizal fungi. They are able to associate with roots of plants of the Pinaceae family forming ectomycorrhize (Verma & Reddy, 2015). These fungi play an important role in the attempt to reforest ecosystems as they are used as bioindicators of the quality of the environment (Sarwar & Khalid, 2014).…”
