Suillus is a genus of ectomycorrhizal fungi associated almost exclusively with Pinaceae. Lack of sample collections in East Asia and unresolved basal phylogenetic relationships of the genus are the major obstacles for better understanding the Suillus evolution. A resolved phylogeny of Suillus representing global diversity was achieved by sequencing multiple nuclear ribosomal and protein coding genes and extensive samples collected in East Asia. Fungal fossils are extremely rare, and the Eocene ectomycorrhizal symbiosis (ECM) fossil of Pinus root has been widely used for calibration. This study explored an alternative calibration scenario of the ECM fossil for controversy. Ancestral host associations of Suillus were estimated by maximum likelihood and Bayesian Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) analyses, inferred from current host information from root tips and field observation. Host shift speciation explains the diversification of Suillus major clades. The three basal subgenera of Suillus were inferred to be associated with Larix, and diverged in early Eocene or Upper Cretaceous. In the early Oligocene or Paleocene, subgenus Suillus diverged and switched host to Pinus subgenus Strobus, and then switched to subgenus Pinus four times. Suillus subgenus Douglasii switched host from Larix to Pseudotsuga in Oligocene or Eocene. Increased species diversity occurred in subgenus Suillus after it switched host to Pinus but no associated speciation rate shifts were detected. Ancestral biogeographic distributions of Suillus and Pinaceae were estimated under the Dispersal Extinction Cladogenesis (DEC) model. Ancestral distribution patterns of Suillus and Pinaceae are related but generally discordant. Dispersals between Eurasia and North America explain the prevalence of disjunct Suillus taxa.

Repeated macrofungal explorations, followed by thorough examination of species through morphology and molecular phylogeny, have made it clear that European and American names of wild mushrooms were inadvertently misapplied quite often to Asian lookalikes by mycologists/taxonomists in the past. Therefore, in order to reveal this mushroom treasure, in recent years, taxonomical research on wild mushrooms has been intensified in Asian countries, including India, by undertaking a combined approach of morpho-taxonomy and multigene molecular phylogeny. Boletoid mushrooms (Boletaceae) are no exception. While working on boletoid mushrooms of the Indian Himalayas, authors recently came across six interesting species of boletoid mushrooms. In the present communication, four novel species, namely Leccinellum binderi, Cyanoboletus paurianus, Xerocomus uttarakhandae, and Xerocomellus himalayanus, are established based on morphology and molecular phylogenetic estimations. Moreover, Cyanoboletus macroporus and Xerocomus fraternus are also reported here for the first time in India.

Fungi are organisms capable of synthesizing metabolites of industrial interest and the standardization of biomass production for the extraction of these compounds has biotechnological applications. The objective of this work was to optimize the in vitro cultivation process for fungi isolated from Pinus sp., standardizing the best conditions for the production of biomass, contributing to its large scale production. Therefore, the conditions of in vitro cultivation of the fungi Botrytis cinerea, Rhizoctonia sp. and Suillus sp., were evaluated based on the maximum production of dry biomass (PBS), varying temperature, medium and cultivation time. The fungi were grown in glass flasks with liquid culture media, in a BOD chamber, without mechanical stirring. Potato-dextrose broth - PD broth (PD), Czapek - CZ broth (CZ) and Malt Extract - EM broth (EM) were evaluated at temperatures ranging from 8 to 32 ºC and incubation times from 7 to 35 days. PD broth showed better results for fungi B.cinerea and Rhizoctonia sp., when compared to CZ and EM broths, in PBS, while Suillus sp. showed better development in EM broth. The best growth temperature based on PBS was 12 ºC and 16 ºC, with 28 and 35 days of cultivation.
