Taq1a polymorphism (rs1800497) is associated with obesity‐related outcomes and dietary intake in a multi‐ethnic sample of children

Abstract: Summary Background In adults, the Taq1a polymorphism (rs1800497) near the D2 receptor (DRD2) gene is associated with body mass index and binge eating and is more prevalent among non‐Hispanic Blacks (NHB) and Hispanic–Americans (HA) relative to non‐Hispanic Whites (NHW). We hypothesize Taq1a polymorphism (rs1800497) risk alleles contribute to paediatric racial/ethnic differences in obesity phenotypes. Objectives This study aims to characterize the relationship between the Taq1a polymorphism (rs1800497), diet an… Show more

“…These data corroborate with other studies, which also show an association of these polymorphisms with the disease [10,[30][31]. It is known that the presence of these polymorphisms, especially the rs1800497 in DRD2 gene, is associated with reduced dopamine function in the brain [32][33] by about 30 to 40% of the normal value [5]. In addition, they seem to be related to increased BMI and eating disorders in women with bulimia spectrum disorder [34][35], being considered a possible marker for high risk of developing pathological eating behavior [36].…”

“…Still regarding the DRD2 gene polymorphism, it is reported in the literature that the TT genotype is associated with increased body fat and increased adiposity compared to the CT and CC genotypes [33]. However, the low frequency of the referred genotype in the present study can be considered a limitation, mainly due to its sample size.…”

“…In this context, glucose and lipid abnormalities were common among TaqI A1 allele carriers, who consumed unhealthier foods than the rest of genotype groups in a general Mexican population [37]. Moreover, an increase in calorie intake from sugar and adiposity was observed in a multi-ethnic sample of children with two TaqI A1 alleles than non-A1 allele carriers [38]. Additionally, a potential interaction between variations in DRD2/ANKK1 (rs1800497, TaqI A1 allele carriers) and FTO (rs8050136, A allele carriers) genes was associated with increased body fat and reduced peripheral insulin sensitivity in a German family study [39].…”

“…Тем не менее, значимых различий в ИМТ и других антропометрических показателях между данными группами обнаружено не было, что подтверждается и более ранними исследованиями [21]. Однако Cardel et al (2019) в своем исследовании обнаружили, что американские дети, как европейского, так и латиноамериканского и африканского происхождения -гомозиготы по минорному аллелю -обладали значимо большим процентом жировой массы, а также потребляли значимо больше калорий и сахара, по сравнению с остальными детьми [8].
