Trans fatty acid composition and tocopherol content in vegetable oils produced in Mexico

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the trans fatty acid (TFA) composition and the tocopherol content in vegetable oils produced in Mexico. Sample oils were obtained from 18 different oil refining factories, which represent 72% of the total refineries in Mexico. Fatty acids and TFA isomers were determined by gas chromatography using a 100-m fused-silica capillary column (SP-2560). Tocopherol content was quantified by normal-phase high-performance liquid chromatography using an ultraviolet detector and a … Show more

“…Samples were saponified and methylated using the AOCS Ce 2-66 method (AOCS, 1998).The methyl esters were analyzed according to Medina-Juarez et al, (2000), using a Varian chromatograph (Mod. 3400, Varian, Mexico City, Mexico) equipped with an FID detector and the appropriate software (Varian Associates, Inc.).…”

“…The objective of refining is to eliminate impurities with the least possible effect on desirable components present in the crude vegetable oils in order to obtain an odorless, bland and oxidatively stable refined vegetable oil that is acceptable to consumers (Ferrari et al, 1996;Medina-Juarez et al, 2000). Acceptable quality characteristics of crude vegetable oils processed by refining methods are of crucial importance in order to obtain such refined vegetable oils.…”

“…The mobile phase for this determination is a mixture of hexane: isopropanol (99.5:0.5) (Medina-Juárez et al, 2000, Ortega-Garcia et al, 2006. The analysis of tocopherols may also be performed with a reverse phase C18 column and an isocratic elution with 100% methanol, using a mass detector (Deselet al, 2007).…”
