Volunteering: The Role of Individual-level Psychological Variables

Abstract: A broad range of activities are often included in volunteering. The motivations for volunteering are also many-faceted. Volunteers form most of the workforce in India's non-profit sector, which is one of the largest and fastest growing sectors in the world. However, volunteering in India has hardly received any scholarly attention. Applying our understanding based on findings on volunteering has been warned against since volunteering does not even mean the same thing for different people living in different cu… Show more

“…Previous studies indicate that a person with high self‐efficacy will exert a greater amount of effort or persist over a longer period than someone with low self‐efficacy (Bandura & Cervone, ; Steers & Porter, ). For instance, volunteers with high self‐efficacy in managing tasks and social relationships were each more likely to engage in volunteer activities than those with low self‐efficacy (Bathini & Vohra, ).…”

“…It is usually without payment negotiation and also not obligatory, but however takes place within the context of an organization (Dekker & Halman, 2003). To further bring the term to light, it is pertinent to consider the action of volunteering in two perspectives; prosocial or helping perspective and delegation involvement perspective (Vohra & Bathini, 2014). They however noted that volunteering activity can involve both helping and delegation involvement perspectives.…”

“…Other works in the literature have shown that coping strategies in volunteers and the quality of the relationships established with other members of the facility where they serve are significant moderating factors in hospital volunteer drop-out caused especially by emotional exhaustion, personal distress, and high levels of burn-out [ 33 , 34 , 35 , 36 ]. Social cognitive factors, such as self-efficacy and motivation, demonstrated strong effects in behavior intention under challenging environments, such as those in hospitals that constantly confront the volunteer with the suffering, anxieties, and heavy limitations of patients [ 37 , 38 , 39 , 40 ]. Generally, self-efficacy and motivation are considered antecedents of perceived involvement [ 41 , 42 ], but according to others, the reverse model would also be sustainable: experience, motivation, and perceived involvement would go a long way toward increasing the hospital worker’s sense of self-efficacy by promoting a state of greater mental and physical well-being [ 43 , 44 ].…”
