Yr58: A New Stripe Rust Resistance Gene and Its Interaction with Yr46 for Enhanced Resistance

Abstract: The quantitative trait loci QYr.sun-3BS and QYr.sun-4DL were identified in the W195/BTSS recombinant inbred line (RIL) population in a previous study. QYr.sun-3BS explained 34 to 59% phenotypic variation in stripe rust response. We evaluated parental genotypes at different growth stages and temperature regimes to detect the critical stage for expression of QYr.sun-3BS. W195 expressed low infection type (IT) ;1C at the fourth leaf stage, when incubated at 21 ± 2°C and the alternate parent BTSS was susceptible (… Show more

“…On chromosome 3B, two markers were significant but their positions could not be obtained. The catalogued rust resistance genes in this chromosome are Yr4 from common wheat (Bansal et al 2009 ) , Yr30/Sr2 that occurs in a high frequency in CIMMYT germplasm (Singh et al 2005 ) , Yr57 (Randhawa et al 2015 ) and Yr58 (Chhetri et al 2016 ). On chromosome 7DS, a marker at 3.7 cM was significant and Yr18/Lr34 is the catalogued gene in this chromosome which is present in a significant frequency in the CIMMYT germplasm.…”

“…The SSR marker cfb3530 was found to be closely linked to Yr4 at a distance of 2.9 ± 1.3 cM. The resistance gene Yr58 was identified in a doubled‐haploid population derived from resistant Indian spring wheat landrace W195 crossed with susceptible South Australian cultivar BTSS, in which it interacted with Yr46 on chromosome 4D to offer enhanced resistance (Chhetri, Bariana, Kandiah, & Bansal, 2016). Marker positions for Yr58 were defined using coordinates from the earlier contig‐level Wheat Chromosome Survey Sequence.…”

“…The short arm of chromosome 3B harbors a number of Yr genes, including Yr4, Yr57, and Yr58. Waagan was reported by Chhetri et al (2016) to possess the Yr58 gene, and this would likely be the candidate gene, as the SNP marker IWA7918 is located close (?8.8 cM) to the barc75 marker identified for Yr58. Additional Waagan-derived resistance alleles were detected on chromosomes 2A, 4B, 5A, and 7D (Table 3, Fig.…”
