Ibero-American Systems for the Dissemination of Scholarly Journals: A Contribution to Public Knowledge Worldwide

Abstract: A vast amount of scholarly journals are edited in Ibero-America, providing altogether a rich picture of the scientific production in this region. However, these journals have traditionally not been part of the international scientific mainstream. Different solutions have been sought to increase their access and visibility, using existing information systems and creating new ones tailored to the region's needs, as well as developing new electronic journals. An analysis of a sample of Latin American ele… Show more

“…Developed by the National Autonomous University of Mexico Library System in collaboration with the regional countries' STI agencies (who provide the information to feed the Latindex database), Latindex is the most comprehensive directory and catalogue of scientific journals. Recently, Latindex launched the Portal of Portals (http://www.latindex.ppl.unam.mx) that includes the most representative databases and repositories of the region (Cetto and Alonso 1999;Cetto and Hillerud 1995;Cetto et al 2010;Delgado 2011aDelgado , 2011bDelgado , 2013. “…Besides the challenge already mentioned at the individual level, in parallel, an unavoidable task for the scientific institutions of the region will be the creation and strategic support for high quality Latin American journals to cover the requirements that might open the doors of international indexing, as well as the use of appropriate techniques and electronic resources, the use of high-quality metadata, the increment of properly trained editors (Cetto et al, 2010) and ideally the open access distribution of knowledge (Babini , 2011) so that gradually a well-grounded science accessible for all, designed and disseminated in Spanish and simultaneously translated into the major languages of science could be produced in the region. Analysis of the history of masculinity in the British colonies in America is done through the lenses of gender inequality.…”

“…Shrum (1997) noted that "if all one is doing is examining science in the low income countries by using these databases, then you will get a massively biased view of what is going on" in developing countries. Cetto, Alonso-Gamboa, and Gonzalez (2010) noted similar lack of representation for Ibero-American publications in SCIE, while Jin and Leydesdorff (2005) reported similarly on Chinese publications. We were unable to find a publication that addressed the specific question we were asking.…”
