“…Two approaches can be considered. First, is improvement of the sample introduction efficiency of ICPMS/MS; for example, the hyphenation of a membrane desolvation system, such as the APEX and Aridus systems, to SF-ICPMS has proved to be effective for enhancing radionuclide analysis sensitivity by a factor of 5 to 10. ,, APEX and Aridus systems both use a membrane desolvation unit to enhance the sensitivity and lower formation of H 2 O-origin background species, such as oxides and hydrides (MO + and MH + ). The improved sensitivity of the APEX and Aridus sample introduction systems are due to the increase of both sample transport efficiency and the aerosol quality.…”

“…Literature shows there are different ways to co-precipitate uranium as well as plutonium and americium [21], such as using Ca 3 (PO 4 ) 2 [22,23], CaF 2 [24], Fe(OH) 3 [25] , HTiO [26,27], and BaSO 4 [28] as precipitant. The alkali-earth (typically calcium) phosphate precipitation is often used for actinides co-precipitation from urines and does not require adding chemical species not already present in urines, except ammonia for pH adjustment over 9.…”

“…A method for the determination of Pu and Np isotopes in urine by ICP-MS was reported by Shi et al 46 to support population monitoring studies in the event of a nuclear incident. The group evaluated a number of approaches to obtain rapid and accurate results with the highest sensitivity.…”

“…Finally, one hopes that the method developed by Shi and colleagues 46 for the determination of Np and Pu isotopes in human urine is never called into practical use. The method was developed for rapid population monitoring following a radiological or nuclear incident.…”
