Ictal EEG source imaging in presurgical evaluation: High agreement between analysis methods

Abstract: HighlightsThere was good agreement between different methods of ictal EEG source imaging.Ictal source imaging achieved an accuracy of 73% (for operated patients: 86%).Agreement between all methods did not necessarily imply accuracy of localization.

“…More recent publications studied patients with extratemporal lobe epilepsy but used only low‐density EEG . However few studies employed 64–76 scalp electrodes for ictal ESI . Lu et al convincingly showed that increasing the number of electrodes is of critical importance for ictal ESI accuracy.…”

“…17,33 However few studies employed 64-76 scalp electrodes for ictal ESI. 10,19,34,35 Lu et al 10 convincingly showed that increasing the number of electrodes is of critical importance for ictal ESI accuracy. Holmes et al 11 published the only study that used high-density 256-channel EEG for ictal-source estimation.…”

“…Patients went through the Danish pre-surgical evaluation programme ( Fig. S1), including LTM, MRI (3 T) and neuropsychological evaluation for all patients, and 18 F-fluorodeoxyglucose PET and 99mTc-hexamethylpropyleneamine oxime SPECT [subtraction ictal SPECT co-registered with MRI (SISCOM)] for selected patients (Fig. S1).…”

“…When there were several seizures having similar semiology and similar topographies of the onset cycles, only the seizure with the smallest artefacts was analysed. When IC onset topography differed, each seizure was analysed separately as described previously [17,18]. Briefly, the IC onset epoch was determined using frequency analysis, topographic mapping of the IC waves and independent components analysis.…”
